They're speaking to me
I am the one who studied their language

They have shown me the hawk
that flies around my head
in other people's dreams

and the kestrel that circles the scaffold

If this is not the end of the world,
it is the end of the way I live
 
 

I am more beautiful than I ever was
The pain within me has deepened
 
 
 

Everyone listens when I speak
They laugh as I walk away
 
 
 

In the middle of the night my friends
remove the pistols from their mouths
I take the pillow off my face
 
 
 

The eyes of dogs and children follow
a music in my voice that sings me to sleep
I rock in the motion of my comfort

I forget to cry
I pull out of the bliss that would surround me

My mother struggles to outlive me
The path of forgiving eludes me

They see me wearing the color called
now this, now that

I appear as anyone
No one who sees my face is unmoved

The hands of their eyes clutch a dream of my
       shimmering
